Article 1 of the General Statute of the Procuradores of the Courts of Spain defines the basic nature of the procuradores:
The Procuratorship is a liberal and independent profession that may be practised by those people who, fulfilling the conditions required in this Statute, who solicit and obtain membership of a College of Procuradores.
Procuradores assume the task of representing the rights and interests of their client (poderdante) before the Courts of Justice". Article 3 (EGPTE) stipulates that:
Appearance before the Tribunals and Courts will be carried out through procuradores in the cases and in the manner determined by the Laws.
All advertising is prohibited. The main role of the procurador is in relation to representation of clients in courts.
